The town of Carthage, Mississippi was the site of the latest
installment for taping of a documentary on the Vietnam War.
The
video is focusing on one piece of machinery, theHuey helicopter, and
the thousands of soldiers who flew in them. This project is helping to
heal emotional wounds of those taking part.
"My
heart was pounding when I heard the blades at first, when I saw Larry
in there. You can't imagine what it's like after 32 years. We've seen
some heavy combat," said Len Malick.
It's
friends like Len Malick and Larry Castagneto that are being reunited
for a documentary called ‘In the Shadow of the Blade,’ a film
about Vietnam pilots and their crews who relied on the Huey helicopter
and each other in the heat of battle.
"I
think it's the most important documentary that’s ever been done.
It's us telling the story," said Castagneto.
Friday,
the crew landed in Carthage, Mississippi, on their journey across the
country, re-uniting vets who are sharing their perspective on the war.
Malick
said, "That one year brought us so close together that if our
country asked us to go to war we would leave our family and friends
and do it all over again."
Castagneto
added, "The sound of the blades--the wop, wop, wop--it was the
soundtrack of our youth. It's a welcome home."
"To
give people an opportunity to get inside and fly again, that’s the
magic and allows them to open up," said Patrick Fries.
It
also gives a chance to interact with others who lost loved ones in
Vietnam, like Kathleen Crow Settlemier of Jackson.
"This
is my son David Crow III. He flew in Vietnam. He was with the 48th
assault helicopter," said Settlemier.
The
documentary is giving Vietnam vets a chance to share their experiences
together that went on to shape history.
"You
cry because of pain. This is more tears of joy than anything else
being with these guys. There were a lot of good things," said
Castagneto.
Reunited
for one more tour of duty, these veterans say they'll shed a lot of
tears along the way, but it will be well worth it, just to be back
together again.
