Accident Summary: The UH-1B, 63-8658, was flying on a training mission at the 1st Infantry Division base camp at Di An, RVN. Upon entering the traffic pattern, the tower cleared the aircraft for autorotations to runway 18. Two other UH-1 aircraft were in the pattern practicing autorotations. The instructor pilot then demonstrated a touchdown autorotation to the paved portion of the runway. At this time the tower advised the aircraft that all touchdown autorotations must be made to the unpaved south runway overrun. The instructor pilot then performed two autorotations to the overrun with a power recovery. On the next demonstration, the instructor pilot elected to touchdown. He selected a spot in the middle of the overrun for touchdown, but during his deceleration flare and initial pitch application he realized that he would not land at the intended point. At that time the instructor pilot spotted a ditch across his flight path at the end of the overrun. He attempted to roll on the throttle and lift the aircraft across the ditch, but this action was unsuccessful and the aircraft settled into the ditch with little forward motion. Major damage resulted to the skids, cross tubes and tail boom. There were no injuries in the accident. This UH-1B was previously a gunship, however, it was de-armed at the time of the accident.
