THE FLIGHT WAS A MAINTENANCE TEST FLIGHT, WHICH ORIGINATED AT BIEN HOA AIR BASE, (SPARTAN FIELD) AT 0245 HOURS LOCAL TIME, 27 JUNE 1970. THE PILOT HAD TAKEN THE AIRCRAFT ON THE TEST FLIGHT TO CHECK ON MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON THE TAIL ROTOR SYSTEM. APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES AFTER TAKE-OFF THE PILOT MADE CHECK, THE PILOT NOTED THAT HE HAD NO POWER RESPONSE FROM THE ENGINE. THE PILOT IMMEDIATELY LOWERED THE PITCH AND CHECKED HIS ENGINE INSTRUMENTS. ALL INSTRUMENTS WERE IN THE GREEN ARC, SO HE TRIED TO APPLY POWER. WITH NO POWER AVAILABLE THE PILOT ENTERED AUTOROTATION AND NOTIFIED OPERATIONS THAT HE WAS HAVING A FORCED LANDING SOUTH OF BIEN HOA. DURING THE DESCENT TO AN OPEN AREA THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A SMALL TREE AND AN EXCESSIVE FLARE WAS APPLIED, CAUSING THE TAIL ROTOR TO STRIKE THE GROUND AND CAUSE SEPARATION OF THE TAIL ROTOR AND THE 90 DEGREE GEARBOX. THE AIRCRAFT THEN STRUCK THE GROUND IN AN APPROXIMATELY LEVEL ATTITUDE AND CAME TO REST ACROSS A DRAINAGE DITCH IN THE AREA. THERE WAS NO WRECKAGE DISTRIBUTION, EXCEPT FOR ONE TAIL ROTOR BLADE LOCATED 135 FT. FROM THE MAIN WRECKAGE. THERE WAS NO FIRE.\\
