THE WAR IS OVER As he laid his gun to rest. The fight was hard, the jungle was tough, But I gave it my very best. It's time for peace and I'm so tired, I've done all I can do. Now the time has come for me to go home, To the world that I once knew. The war is over the mother said, As she read the letter once more. My son survived, while others died, Soon he'll come walking in my door. The war is over the wife told her child, Our daddy will soon be here. You've grown so much since he's been gone, Cause he's been away for a year. The soldier you see, was a fighting man, In a war he couldn't win. So he laid down his gun and walked away, Never to kill again. The war is over the veteran said, As he sipped at his jug of wine. The fighting's behind me and now I'm home, Where everything should be fine. But the world had changed while the soldier was gone, And his welcome wasn't as grand. As he hoped it would be, once he was finally free, And home in his native land. The war is over the veteran said, As he laid his jug to rest. I don't understand why they treat me so bad, When I gave them my very best. Copyright 2002 - Roger Heard |
