Ian Findlay

Australian RAAF Vietnam Veteran 1967-68

Ian Findlay was born in Scotland in 1940.  He was raised in the poorer sections of Glasgow area and immigrated to Australia in 1950.

Ian joined the Australian Air Force in 1957 and served with the RAAF in Vietnam from April 1967 until April 1968.  He served with 9 Squadron (helicopters) and Base Support Flight (Operational Support Unit) in the Transport/Refueling/Air Movements elements and saw combat in Saigon at the Newport Docks, Saigon streets and Tan Son Nhut at the outbreak of the TET Offensive.

Ian retired from the Air Force in 1977; and retired from his job as a Training Development Officer with the Australian Road Transport Training Committee in 1993.  He now lives with his wife Lesley in Tasmania.  He has a 24-year-old daughter and a 35-year-old son.

Ian was baptized in 1992 after many years of suffering what was later revealed as PTSD and associated problems.  He went on to become a Deacon in the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church.  Although he still struggles with the past from time to time, he has found peace with God and a meaning to this life.
